The weather this Memorial Day weekend was pretty poopy. It rained all weekend. And, since my $800 van has a hole in the roof, it rained inside my van too. Well, a little duct tape fixed that though! Aside from the weather, here are some of my thoughts from this weekend:
1. Memorial Day was first started in 1868 as a day to remember those that gave their all for their country. Being in the Marine Corps has made me think about this a lot more. When my parents would talk about Memorial Day or Veterens Day growing up, I only partially understood what they meant. I knew that they had lost friends in the military, but it wasn't a first hand experience. For the first time in almost two years in the Marine Corps, I know what it's like to lose a friend in war. That's what makes this Memorial Day both better and worse at the same time. To all those who have lost loved ones in the military, happy Memorial Day. This day is about you and your loved one. To those who haven't, be thankful for that! Take every opportunity you have to thank those who defend our country and put everything on the line.
2. There was a great piece on the Today Show with Katie Couric this weekend. She had the authors of a book called AWOL: The Unexcused Absence of America's Upper Classes from Military Service. There's some excerpts from the book here. They talked about how the rich aren't serving in the military and because of that, a large majority of the law makers have no personal connection to the military. It sounds like it would be a good book.
3. Lastly, regarding the issue of Marines killing 24 civilians in Iraq. I have no idea what happened, but how can so many of our leaders presume guilt? Isn't our legal system based on innocense until proven guilty? Well, I applaud Gen Pace for standing up and saying that people shouldn't presume guilt. If the investigation concludes that they are guilty, then those Marines should be punished. If it concludes that their actions were right, they should have their commands restored.
That's all on this subject. Happy Memorial Day!

I put some videos of Nathan online since a bunch of people have been asking for them. Right now, its' the 80% solution. It's not a pretty page by any means. I'm trying to figure out how I want the page to look, so right now they're just up there. Also, they're not meant for streaming, so they have to completely download before you can watch them. I'll fix that on the next videos. Anyway, here ya go:

Yup, last night Nathan decided that he wanted to start crawling. He was making the littlest steps and then he'd fall over and that was it. Well, he must've been thinking about it all night, because when he woke up this morning, he was crawling like he'd been doing it his whole life! So, instantly, life has changed for us. He's now into EVERYTHING, the little bugger! He keeps spilling Sandy's water dish after crawing into the kitchen, he keeps going for the light cords...ugggh...this is gonna take some getting used too. As Michael Scott (The Office on NBC) would say: "Buckle up, it's gonna be a bumpy ride!"[ 1 comment ] ( 5 views ) | [ 0 trackbacks ] | permalink

Nathan Loves Rice. Period. End of blog entry. Just kidding, I'll bore you to death with a little bit more info
After spending about 15 minutes walking around the sea wall and giving Nathan a tan, we hopped back into the Habu and went to Jusco. We ended up in the food court so he could finish his lunch and I could start mine. I was in the mood for Mexican food, so naturally I ordered the Okinawan favorite: taco rice.
As I was holding bite sized pieces of toast and cheese for Nathan, he watched me eat my taco rice. Of course, being the observant guy that he is, he realized that he was NOT eating taco rice and I was. A few cries/whimpers later, I rectified the situation and put some of my lunch onto his plate. That quickly turned into him eating almost half of my rice. As I said, he is now Gohan Boy: Super Hero of Japan.

Last night we went to the Transit Cafe for dinner. I had $200 in Yen in my wallet, so we knew we could go anywhere! Of course Lisa's immediate choice was Ono Kau Kau, which is her favorite restaurant on the island. On our way there, however, she remembered that we wanted to try this place called the Transit Cafe that's on the second story of a building along the Sunabe Sea Wall. So, I whipped the car around and we headed there. The place is really neat architecturally and has an amazing view of the water and sunset.
Anyway, Lisa ordered the "abagabo salad" (otherwise known as avacado salad) and I ordered the bacon, salami, and sauasage (aka hotdog) pizza. I should've gotten the vibe when we first walked in that this was a "sit down and relax" kind of place, but that thought never came to me until AFTER we waited 45 minutes for our food. Nathan was really hungry, so we kept feeding him the food we brought for him. Unfortuantely, since we thought we were going to Ono Kau Kau (which has really fast service), we didn't bring a lot of food with us. Just some peas, squash, and the Gerber puffs that he eats as a snack.
Needless to say, Nathan started to get a bit fussy about 30 minutes into it (after we ran out of most of his food). It was also a bit windier on the deck than we thought it would be. Add to that the fact that Nathan's third tooth is coming in and he was tired. So, Lisa made the command decision to get the food to go. Lisa took Nathan to the car and I paid for the food and waited for it to be finished. They packed up the abagabo salad in a normal to go box and the pizza in a cut up cereal box with aluminum foil in it and we left.
We got home, put Nathan on the floor to play for a bit, and ate our elegant cuisine out of to go packages on our messy dining room table! The food ended up being really good and we decided that we'd go back again, but under a little bit different circumstances. If you're looking for a yuppy place to relax and have good food with a beautiful view, the Transit Cafe is a great place. If you're looking for a quick, baby friendly place to eat, maybe the better choice is Ono Kau Kau.

For the uninitiated, NMCI is the Navy and Marine Corps Intranet. NMCI is the bane of my existance. It's all of our computer and networking related stuff outsourced to a private contracting company named EDS. Really, there's nothing Marine Corps about it. We got forced into this by the Navy and we're not at all happy. Today, I spent two hours in a meeting with a bunch of NMCI folks all telling me what the CAN'T do. Or if they can do it, it'll take over a month.
I'm not going to go into everything because it would take me a year. Let me just say this: as a Marine officer, I'm spoiled. When I tell a Marine that we need to do X, Y, and Z, it gets done. There's no "uhhh...you're going to have to fill out this form and then I'll take it, sit on it for a week and hand it to another person who will sit on it for another week, etc." It's called MISSION ACCOMPLISHMENT!!! Marines want to accomplish the mission and move on. That's it. Ugggghhhh...this pisses me off!!!

Happy Mother's Day! I was hoping that today would be as beautiful as yesterday, but it wasn't. Oh well, we made the best of it. Nathan and I gave Lisa her card this morning. Now she has a set of 9 month old hand and feet prints!!! She got some other nick nacks along the way this morning also. We went down to Camp Kinser and had Sunday brunch at Kinser Surf Side. It was really pretty. We were the first ones there, so that was kind of neat! It was just as good as the one at the Butler Officer's Club, but cheaper and less crowded. After that we ran some errands, came home, and sat outside for a while. The sky was pretty cloudy but it was nice out. In fact, it reminded us a lot of Colorado. So, we had dinner outside and then used our little Yakiniku grill to roast marshmellows for s'mores! I certainly had a good time. Let's see what Lisa says on her blog before we make the final call though [ add comment ] | [ 0 trackbacks ] | permalink

Over the last couple of days, Lisa and I have been talking about discipline a lot more. It's now the time to start saying "no" to Nathan and making sure he understands that he needs to do what we ask him. For example, when we're changing his diaper, he just wants to roll over and play with anything on the floor. If he can't do that, he starts crying or screaming until he gets what he wants.
What's weird is that I could see us falling into a trap where we don't realize that he's at an age where he should begin to understand "no" and so we just keep chalking it up to "oh, he's still just a baby". Before you know it, he's 5 years old and he's in charge of the family! Well, that isn't gonna happen with him. We're starting with the little things, like diaper changes
